Graduate students at the University of Massachusetts are hosting an open forum on gender violence in the hopes of creating a policy proposal for the University administration today. From 2 to 4 p.m. in room 101 of the UMass Campus Center, the newly formed Civil Rights Committee (CRC) of GEO will hold an open forum concerning gender violence, titled "Violence, Sex, and Gender: Hidden Realities at UMass Amherst." "An increased climate of violence and a lack of institutional response have placed student and employees at risk," said Antonia Carcelén-Estrada, co-chair of the committee, in a statement. "It is about time to tackle violence in campus from several different perspectives, as they relate not only to the university communities but to society as a whole." The CRC plans a community forum each semester, addressing civil rights issues involving concerns raised by graduate students at meetings. Members of the committee hope this semester's forum presents informative and challenging dialogue surrounding gender violence. Kick off will begin with four experts: Ilana Gerjuoy from the Everywoman's Center at UMass; Davey Shlasko, founder of Think Again Training - providing training and consultation to support communities, organizations, schools and agencies helping them engage in dialogue, increase capacities to work together effectively - Mark Nickerson, co-chair of the Board of Directors at the Men's Resource Center, and Sangeeta Kamat, Associate Professor of International Education at UMass. Each person will present and discuss their goals and programs which will be followed by a question and answer session. The forum's goal is to finalize a strong policy proposal on gender violence for UMass and the GEO that the university cannot ignore, according to the CRC. The CRC deals with any issues concerning any violation of the civil rights of GEO members, including internal incidents. The committee investigates any accusations of racist, sexist, or other discriminatory action on any GEO members, also assisting any member who submits a grievance through the campus Harassment Policy, Sexual Harassment Policy and/or the Affirmative Action Office. --- *You can view this article here.
