Paul Reville, chairman of the Massachusetts State Board of Education, was named the state's new secretary of education this month by Governor Deval Patrick. The appointment becomes effective Aug. 28. Reville, 58, was up against Christopher R. Anderson for the position. He said he believed his appointment as chairman was a result of working closely with Patrick's education team during the past few months and that he did not anticipate a tense relationship between him and Anderson, the Boston Globe reported earlier this month. Legislation passed in January established the new Executive Office of Education, which is aimed to improve policy coordination across all three sectors of education: early education and care, K-12 and higher education. Proposed by Patrick, the office is also intended to guide students seamlessly from one step to the next through the entry level of their education into the workforce. "A first-rate education is the gateway to opportunity," said Patrick. "The Readiness Project will give us the road map for the next phase of education reform, and a strong cabinet-level secretary will provide the leadership. Paul has done a fantastic job as chairman of the Board of Education and will continue to make great contributions as secretary of education. I am excited about what possibilities lie ahead of our kids." Last August, Reville was named chairman of the Board of Education by Patrick. He was also a leader of the state's education reform effort in 1993, and served as a member of the Board of Education from 1991 to 1996. Reville is currently the president of the Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy in Cambridge, director of the education policy and management program, a lecturer on education policy and politics at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, co-chair of the National Center on Time and Learning, and the co-founder and former executive director of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. --- *You can view this article here.
